Mantis Maintenance by dalantech Mantis Maintenance by dalantech
Shot at about 2.5x with a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens.

This critter was almost constantly cleaning itself when it wasn't trying to avoid me and the lens ;)

I was kinda nervous shooting it -only the second time I've shot a mantis and I had that composition stuck in my head. I was afraid I wasn't going to get it into the camera...

No probs!!

PS

They are hard to photograph, aren't they? When I take photo's of them, they either run away or try to climb onto the camera!! :XD: :giggle: :giggle:

I like the fact that his/her compound eyes look like a "human" eye from far. Even when you have one in real in front of you, you can imagine that the "globe" is just a green globe (like our white globes), and that the dark center is the place where lights "goes" (like our pupils). In fact not, it's a whole compound eye. Excellent shot !

I'm gonna burst your bubble: That "pupil" is an optical illusion created by the way the light reflects / refracts off all of those compound lenses ;)

That's the same on Horseflies compound eyes, right ?
Thank you for this explanation, I've always wondered, looking at your high magnification pictures, or even at real insects in front of me. (Worked in the middle of horseflies today, thought about you ^^)

LOL! Thanks -I think... ;)

It's the same for all insects -I don't know of any that do not have a compound eye.

I know that, but some of them have shapes on their eyes -as this mantis- or as in [link] or [link] from your gallery. =)
I find this awesome, if their intelligence (and vision) was a bit more developed I'm sure they could recognize each other, with their different shapes on their eyes. :p
