There isn't much depth at F11 when you're shooting at three times life size...

Spectacular! I have a MPE-65mm and you make me feel like dusting it off. I stopped using it because I like to be free of tripods. The black background doesn't bother me at all and in fact enhances the photograph. Had there been a blue sky and clouds, I would have known they were photoshopped in. I like to see the real thing in a photo like this. Congrats!

Thanks :)

I take all of my macro hand held -I look for ways to brace the camera and I keep the flash duration as short as possible to freeze any motion.

Usually I really like your macro shots, especially the bee photos with the nice backgrounds.

But in all your recent photos in which the insects drink those drops the background ist completely black which I think doesn't look good especially with the black ants.

Don't get me wrong, I really like your macro shots but maybe you could light the background with a slave flash or change the camera angle so that more of the underground ist visible...

Those ants, and the other insects I've shot recently, were all on a tree limb. There just isn't anything in the background that would reflect the light from the flash. If I put something in the background then I think the shot would look "artificial" -there would have to be some explanation for the background and the only think that wouldn't look fake is a leaf. Unfortunately there's no way I can hold a leaf with one hand and take the shot with the other ;)

I'm on the fence about background color -I like it, and I like black backgrounds too. The advantage of a black background is that there is nothing to distract you from the subject...

you should try putting the honey on the underside of a tree limb, and take a shot looking up at them with the sky in the bg

i do like this a lot

I just really appreciate being able to see these living things close up.

It kind of makes me have more respect for them, and see them more as living creatures with minds, rather than just little bugs.

At 3x and F11 the background would still be black...

I think so, too. Usually it does not distract the viewer when there's a plain black. But what I wanted to say in a confused way is that a black ant looks a bit "lost" in all this black.

It's on a branch, okay, then there is really no background which could be lit... :)
